Commercial Licensing
Retflo is dual-licensed. Individuals, worker cooperatives, and democratically governed organizations use it free under the RCCL. Investor-owned organizations license it commercially. If the RCCL covers you, this page does not apply to you: use the Work, and provide the attestation the license describes.
Who needs a commercial license
If your organization is investor-owned, publicly traded, or structured so that profit flows primarily to people who do not perform its labor, you need a commercial license to use Retflo. This applies regardless of industry, size, or stated purpose.
The test is structural: who controls the organization, and who receives its surplus. The full definitions are in the RCCL, Sections 1.4 and 1.5.
What a commercial license gets you
A commercial license grants your organization the right to use Retflo, including the argument graph, API, content, and Derivative Works, on negotiated terms outside the RCCL.
Pricing
There is no rate card. Terms are negotiated case by case and scale with the organization and the use.
Commercial license revenue funds the project's development and cooperative infrastructure. That commitment is written into the Contributor License Agreement, Section 7, along with an annual revenue summary obligation.
How to inquire
Email licensing@retflo.org with:
- Your organization's name and the intended use
- The scale of use (number of users, integration type)
- Whether you are inquiring for yourself or on behalf of the organization
We negotiate directly and in good faith.
For AI companies and model developers
Training a machine learning model on Retflo's content constitutes Use under the RCCL (Section 5.4). If your organization is a Prohibited Entity and has trained or intends to train on the Work, you need a commercial license, whether the model is distributed or served privately.
