Reverse Dominance: Equality Is Enforced, Not Innate

The critic’s picture: hierarchy is the human default, and egalitarian arrangements are fragile departures from it. The anthropological record shows the opposite mechanism — and the mechanism matters more than the averages.
Boehm’s Finding
Christopher Boehm’s cross-cultural survey of forager societies (Hierarchy in the Forest) documents what he named the reverse dominance hierarchy: mobile forager bands maintained political equality for tens of millennia not because nobody sought dominance, but because everyone else actively suppressed whoever did. Ridicule for the boastful hunter. Ostracism for the self-aggrandizer. Exile, and in persistent cases execution, for the would-be dominator. The whole coalition dominates any individual who attempts to dominate — dominance inverted, pointed downward at upstarts.
Three consequences for the human-nature debate:
- Egalitarianism is not the absence of politics. It is the oldest politics. The forager band is not a power vacuum; it is a permanently active anti-dominance coalition. Equality was an achievement, continuously produced, for longer than any other political form has existed.

What Broke It — Stated Honestly
Forager equality died almost everywhere at the same archaeological moment: storable surplus. Grain doesn’t rot; hoards buy guards, dependents, and time; and accumulated advantage compounds faster than informal norms can respond. The defector doesn’t have to beat the coalition in a fight — he has to outgrow its reaction speed. Add scale: the coalition’s mechanism runs on faces. At band scale, monitoring is free and reputation is total. Among millions of strangers, defection is anonymous and the watching becomes a specialized job — and the specialized watcher is accumulating exactly the asymmetric capacity the norm exists to prevent.
These are the genuine engineering constraints, and the framework states them rather than hiding them, because the design program is built against them: compounding must be interrupted structurally (→ econ/inequality-ratchet.md), monitoring must be distributed and automated rather than specialized (→ auth/inertia-vs-capture.md), and the norm must be reproduced institutionally rather than assumed (→ soc/cultural-reproduction.md).
Norms and Structures Are Substitutes at the Margin
The stronger a population’s anti-dominance practice, the smaller the formal enforcement kernel needed to keep concentration suppressed. High-trust societies already govern with a lighter touch than low-trust ones; the relationship is observable and continuous. This reprices the entire cultural project: building cooperative practice is not utopian preamble — it is kernel-shrinking, the work that directly reduces how much crystallized authority a society requires. Not a claim that decay stops, but that actively fighting decay — perpetually, structurally, as a constitutive activity — is the thing the species has always done at its best. The fight doesn’t end. That isn’t the position’s weakness; it is its realism.
The Coalition’s Other Victims — Stated Before the Critic Does
Collective, undelegated finality with no procedural constraint is also the mechanism of majoritarian tyranny, and the ethnographic record does not let this be waved away: leveling mechanisms hit deviance generally, not dominance specifically. The heretic, the strange one, the tall poppy — ridiculed, ostracized, exiled by the same unanimous instrument, with no appeal, because appeal is what delegation creates. The band protects equality and enforces conformity with one tool, and the tool cannot tell the difference by itself.
This is the kernel question’s mirror image — who guards the deviant from the coalition? — and the framework answers it the same way it answers the original, with design rather than denial: baseline guarantees that follow the person across jurisdictions, scoped finality with bounded appellate paths (→ auth/federation-vs-state.md), exit that is real rather than symbolic — which requires the economic program that makes exit real (→ econ/exit-and-class.md) — and the blast-radius analysis of what happens when an enforcing majority goes wrong (→ auth/local-tyranny.md). At the norm layer, the same protection is the dignity protocol’s leash: shame attaches to dominance attempts, never to deviance or to questions (STYLE-GUIDE §5.5). A coalition that levels its weirdos is not an anti-dominance coalition — it is a dominance hierarchy with the majority at the top, and the framework’s critique applies to it with full force.
And the comparative cuts back at the critic who offers proceduralism as the cure: concentrated orders persecute deviants with the procedural layer fully intact — Jim Crow was proceduralized persecution, administered through courts, statutes, and due process (→ hist/jim-crow.md). Process alone has never been the shield; the question is which architecture makes persecution expensive, and that question is the framework’s home ground, not the sovereign’s.
The Vigilance Must Welcome the Stress-Tester
A coalition defined by perpetual vigilance against decay needs, more than any other institution, the people who ask “what if one of us defects?” out loud, on purpose. Treating the question as a confession — “whoever asks about the defector intends to be the defector” — converts vigilance into loyalty screening and makes the framework unfalsifiable, which is the failure mode of every guarded orthodoxy the framework critiques. Security engineers who ask “what if someone steals the key” are the reason the lock works. The threat model is the immune system, not the infection.
