The Survival Test: Circular Reasoning
Position
“Any political system that cannot defend itself against real-world threats is not a viable political system.” This sounds like realism. It is actually circular.
The Circularity
If the “test” of a governance model is whether it survives against states that exist to destroy alternatives, then you have defined viability as “acceptable to existing power structures.” That is like arguing:
- The only viable media is what survives censorship
- The only viable business is what survives the mafia’s protection racket
- The only viable political position is one the ruling class permits
Survival tells you who has coercive dominance, not what governance is best for human flourishing.
”Your System Gets Destroyed Every Time”
Bottom-up projects have been crushed by better-armed states. That is a truth about who had artillery, foreign backing, and professional armies — not a truth about governance theory. The Free Territory of Ukraine fought multiple enemies and was betrayed by former allies. Revolutionary Catalonia fought fascism and Stalinist sabotage simultaneously. The conclusion “therefore hierarchy is natural” does not follow from “therefore hierarchy currently has more guns.”
What The Survival Argument Actually Proves
If organized power crushes disorganized people, the solution is not worshiping the boot. It is building organization that doesn’t harden into a permanent boot. The critic’s conclusion — “give up and accept the sovereign” — is exactly the learned helplessness the existing system produces.
